My dear readers,
I had to write a spot news story for my journalistic writing course at university. And, guess what... I have to post it on my blog. So, here you go :)
Who says that German students don’t eat healthy?

New eco-box attracts wide interest among students of Chemnitz University of Technology
“Great idea! That is one of the things I always wanted to take part in!” This was only one of the enthusiastic remarks that could be heard at the third pick-up session of the new eco-box at Chemnitz University. Surprisingly, quite a lot of students turned up to receive the vegetable and fruit box issued today. But what is it all about? Don’t health experts always claim that university students are too busy to cook healthy meals? What’s changed?
It all started about a month ago when NATUC, a group of the Student’s Union responsible for ecology and sustainability, started its cooperation with the local farm Demeter-Guidohof. Together they decided to provide an eco-box for students of Chemnitz University as means for better and healthier cooking among them. This box is filled to the brim with fresh, ecologically grown, seasonal and local fruit, vegetables and herbs. But how does it work?
In the beginning, each interested student had to sign up for one of two boxes. The standard eco-box contains fruit, vegetables and herbs only and sells for 10 Euros. The second option is the eco-box plus which also includes other ecological food such as bread, milk, pasta or cheese (14 Euros). Since the 23rd of April, the box is directly distributed once a week to the interested amateur chefs. This system avoids long delivery ways and ensures freshness of the food. The Demeter-Guidohof is a farm just 20km outside of Chemnitz, situated in the village of Limbach-Oberfrohna. The farmer will deliver the boxes to the office of the Student’s Union, and the recipients have two hours to pick them up.
At this third pick-up session today, approximately 70 students turned up for their “box of health”, as one of them put it. For them it is an easy way to maintain healthy eating habits to a reasonable price. The box easily sustains one person for a whole week, and the variety of food provides them the opportunity for diverse nutrition. “When I heard of this box, I was hooked straight away”, said one female student and happily set off to prepare a delicious dinner. “Probably stuffed peppers with apple pie for dessert”, she cried as farewell.
